SWIC Debuts Newsletter
A monthly report of SWIC's activities
FEATURE STORY OF THE MONTH

SWIC Forging Partnerships
with Faith Community

Everyone at Schuylkill Women in Crisis (SWIC) is always busy with different activities throughout the year. Whether it's our annual Golf Tournament or one of our various other exciting events, something is almost always going on.

Which brings us to the debut of the SWIC E-Newsletter. Friends and supporters are important to SWIC and help keep us going in our efforts to end the problem of domestic violence, so we developed an easy way for individuals and organizations to keep up to date with what is happening with SWIC on a monthly basis.

At the beginning of each month, those of you on SWIC's e-mail list will receive the newsletter electronically. Inside this email will be a link to this page, which will be updated each month with news of past and upcoming events, updates on progress with organization fundraisers and activities, videos, and much more!

You can visit www.s-wic.org and look for the link entitled Signup For Our Newsletter, located on the sidebar. You can also email swicnews@gmail.com to sign up.

"Alicia's Column"

We have many exciting events at
Schuylkill Women in Crisis (SWIC) this fall!

This column will be a monthly feature in SWIC’s e-newsletter and will highlight SWIC events, volunteer opportunities, and much more. But we need a name for this column! Do you have a great idea for a clever name????? The participant who submits the winning entry will receive a set of mug rugs in colors of their choice from The Grateful Thread, SWIC’s weaving business. Submit your idea(s) in writing to SWIC, P.O. Box 96, Pottsville, PA 17901 or to swicagency@comcast.net by October 26, 2009. Play the above video to hear more details about this column, this contest, and mug rugs!

* It’s volunteer training time! We are seeking caring, sensitive individuals who are interested in assisting victims of domestic violence and their children. Volunteer tasks include clerical duties, answering crisis calls, providing information and referrals, assisting victims filing for Protection From Abuse orders in SWIC's Victim Advocate Office in the Schuylkill County Courthouse, and providing coverage at the shelter facility as needed. In order to work with victims of domestic violence, you must complete a 40-hour training, which will be held this fall. If you are interested, please contact Alicia immediately at swicmedadv@comcast.net or 570.622.3991.

* SWIC will be out and about in the months of September and October at various public events. Look for us and say, “Hi!” If you are a current volunteer and are interested in helping at any of these events, please contact Alicia at the office for more information.

Alone, helpless, hopeless… that’s how women and children feel living with an abuser. When victims of domestic violence decide to break the silence and seek help, surveys show that a leader in their faith community will be among the first people they turn to.

Last summer, a SWIC staff person and a board member, who is a member of the local clergy, traveled to California to attend a seminar to learn how domestic violence organizations can better partner with the faith community to help families impacted by abuse. As a result of that seminar, SWIC has begun to contact various councils of churches in the Schuylkill County community to forge relationships and promote awareness of SWIC and its services.

As clergy clearly know and researchers and statisticians have only begun to substantiate in the last 20 years, trauma often raises spiritual concerns in individuals. SWIC seeks to partner with the faith community in order to (1) provide avenues whereby abuse victims may address spiritual concerns and (2) provide information to the faith community to address other needs of victims in a way that promotes safety for all.

SWIC Vids
SWIC's Presence on YouTube

In order to help further spread the awareness of the problem of domestic violence, SWIC is taking advantage of different oppurtunities in our culture and media, including certain growing trends. One of these trends includes the intense popularity of YouTube.

YouTube is no longer just individuals posting random videos; it is now an effective tool that is used by almost anyone you can think of, including news journalists, businesses, TV stations, and even by President Barack Obama.

By featuring our videos on YouTube, people who are interested in our organization can easily get a visual insight into what we do here. It can also be a tool in helping introduce others to a service they may have not known existed and give them help. Spreading awareness is a good thing, and we hope our presence on YouTube can do that and more.
