FEATURE STORY OF THE MONTH

Thank You to Community
for Holiday Thoughtfulness
Golf Tournament
Changes Venue
Words can not adequately express how grateful we are to everyone who contributed to make the recent holiday season a time of joy for women and children fleeing abuse. Once again the Schuylkill County community went above and beyond our wildest expectations to provide food, treats, decorations, and gifts for hurting families.

In the words of one brave woman who wrote to SWIC:

“Words can not truly express the heartfelt gratitude I have for all of your help and assistance over the past few months. There were some very trying times, and I know in my heart that I am going to be okay as long as I keep moving forward.… I am extremely grateful for the wonderful gifts.…I was overwhelmed by the generosity shown by the community to my family….”

We share the gratitude of the recipients of those thoughtful contributions when we say “Thank you.”

One in 3 women will be abused by an intimate partner in their lifetime. However, domestic violence affects the whole community. If your business or organization is interested in a presentation about domestic violence, please call 570.622.3991. Presentations can be tailored to your needs.

SWIC's Annual Holiday
Fund Drive Continues

Thank you to all who have already donated to SWIC’s Annual Holiday Fund Drive this year!

Without your generosity, SWIC would not be able to ensure that comprehensive and often lifesaving services remain available for area families impacted by domestic violence. In the past year, SWIC turned away the greatest number of victims seeking shelter in its history, with 20 women and 15 children denied shelter when it was filled to capacity – further proving the dire need for shelter expansion. The agency is moving forward with plans to expand shelter services. In addition, SWIC continues to expand community awareness of domestic violence through seminars and outreach to various professionals, including law enforcement, prosecution, faith leaders, educators, health care, and employers.

National studies conclude that the greatest safety measure domestic violence victims can take is seeking services from a provider, such as SWIC. Domestic violence is a community problem and requires a community response to eradicate. If you are interested in contributing to this cause, please contact SWIC’s office at 570.622.3991; or donate on SWIC’s website, www.s-wic.org; or mail a check payable to “SWIC” to P.O. Box 96, Pottsville, PA 17901. Thank you!

Spring is surely right around the corner! The 15th Annual SWIC Spring Challenge Golf Tournament will be held Friday, April 30, 2010 (mark your calendars!), but the location has changed to Mountain Valley Golf Course, Barnesville. Enjoy a lower rate to participate with lunch and dinner included. Not a golfer? Just come for dinner and still support Schuylkill Women in Crisis (SWIC).

Watch for a new look – new logo, new colors, -- but same great cause to support domestic violence services in Schuylkill County.

SWIC's MOST WANTED List

SWIC would not be able to provide comprehensive services to about 1,000 victims of domestic violence each year without community support. Each month in this e-newsletter we will list items most needed at this time for use in SWIC’s emergency shelter. For the month of January, we could use:
        · Toliet paper
        · Cleaning products
        · Laundry detergent

If you are able to donate any of these items, please call SWIC’s office at 570.622.3991 or email swicagency@comcast.net to make arrangements. Thank you!
