FEATURE STORY OF THE MONTH

SWIC's Annual Holiday
Fund Drive Continues
Golf Tournament
Changes Venue
In spite of economic upheaval, the state budget impasse, funding cuts, and spending increases, Schuylkill Women in Crisis (SWIC) is pleased to have been able to meet the needs of 1,014 victims of domestic violence last year. We are thankful for our donors and for the commitment of our staff who worked with SWIC, without certainty about the next week’s paycheck, to make sure services continued uninterrupted.

SWIC’s Annual Holiday Fund Drive helps to ensure that comprehensive and often lifesaving services remain available for area families impacted by domestic violence. In the past year, SWIC turned away the greatest number of victims seeking shelter in its history, with 20 women and 15 children denied shelter when it was filled to capacity – further proving the dire need for shelter expansion. The agency is moving forward with plans to expand shelter services. In addition, SWIC continues to expand community awareness of domestic violence through seminars and outreach to various professionals, including law enforcement, prosecution, faith leaders, educators, health care, and employers.

We would not have been able to accomplish as much as we have without community support. National studies conclude that the greatest safety measure domestic violence victims can take is seeking services from a provider, such as SWIC. Your gift to the 2009 Annual Holiday Fund Drive may be the most important gift you give this season.

Out & About!

Finally! We have chosen a name for our e-newsletter column on volunteer opportunities and events where SWIC is participating -- Out and About! Thank you to all who submitted entries. Stay tuned for possible future contests.

SWIC will be conducting many presentations throughout the winter months to business and civic organizations. If you are interested in a presentation for your community group, workplace, church group, or school, please contact SWIC at 570.622.3991 .

If you are a member of the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Class, we will see you at the Non Profit Expo on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at the Schuylkill YMCA, Pottsville.

Volunteers, -- SWIC could use your help with coverage at a table at an all-day event at the Schuylkill Mall, Frackville, on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, for a “Day of Wellness.” If you are interested and available, please call 570.622.3991 and let us know!

Volunteer Trainings Scheduled

A 45-hour volunteer training for those who wish to volunteer directly with SWIC clients will begin 6:30-9:30 p.m. Monday, January 11, 2010. The trainings will take place every Monday and Wednesday until February 25. This training is mandatory for those who wish to volunteer directly with victims of domestic violence. The next training will be held in September 2010.

If you are interested in volunteering but can not attend the training or do not want to help directly with victims, you may help as an indirect service volunteer. In this capacity, a volunteer can help with fundraisers, clerical assistance, outside maintenance, staffing tables at malls and other public events, etc. We ask that all indirect service volunteers attend one three-hour orientation session within six months of beginning to volunteer for SWIC. This orientation will familiarize volunteers with a basic understanding of domestic violence as well as SWIC and its services and policies. These indirect service volunteer trainings will be held January 21, April 19, July 14, and October 12, 2010. Please call Darla, 570.622.3991, for more details.

Keep your eyes open for change on the horizon! The 15th Annual SWIC Spring Challenge Golf Tournament will be held Friday, April 30, 2010 (mark your calendars!), but the location has changed to Mountain Valley Golf Course, Barnesville. Enjoy a lower rate to participate with lunch and dinner included. Not a golfer? Just come for dinner and still support Schuylkill Women in Crisis (SWIC).

Watch for a new look – new logo, new colors, -- but same great cause to support domestic violence services in Schuylkill County.

        · Paper towels
        · Hand soap
        · Hand sanitizer

If you are able to donate any of these items, please call SWIC offices during a weekday, 570.622.3991, to make arrangements. Thank you!
