SWIC Plans Second Annual ARISE
As Part of Growing Partnership
with Faith Community

As clergy clearly know and researchers and statisticians have only begun to substantiate in the last 20 years, trauma often raises spiritual concerns in individuals. When victims of domestic violence decide to break the silence and seek help, surveys show that a leader in their faith community will be among the first people to whom they turn.

Schuylkill Women in Crisis (SWIC) seeks to partner with the faith community in order to (1) provide avenues whereby abuse victims may address spiritual concerns and (2) provide information to the faith community to address other needs of victims in a way that promotes safety for all. Over the past year, SWIC staff person Darla Troutman has spoken to many individual church leaders as well as ecumenical councils of churches in the Schuylkill County community to forge relationships and promote awareness of SWIC and its services.

As another step in SWIC’s efforts to build partnerships with the faith community, the agency held its first annual free two-hour informational seminar called ARISE (Awareness Raising, Information Sharing Event) in 2009. The second annual ARISE will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, October 21, 2010, at the Lighthouse Church, Route 61, Orwigsburg.

ARISE is open to pastors and other leaders in the faith community – anyone who may be in a position where others may seek their counsel or help in times of need, such as if they are experiencing or have experienced abuse in a relationship. Although the seminar is free, registration is requested to ensure adequate spacing and refreshments. Topics to be covered include basic information about domestic violence, SWIC and its services, teen dating violence, and the use of technology in harassment and stalking. A resource table will be available for browsing, and time will be allotted for questions and discussion. More information about ARISE will follow in e-newsletters as well as in direct mailing and emailing to faith leaders.

Anyone interested in inviting SWIC to speak to a church or subgroup (such as youth group, women’s group, etc.) or anyone with questions about ARISE should contact Darla at 570.622.3991 or swicgrantwriter@comcast.net.

SWIC's MOST WANTED List

SWIC would not be able to provide comprehensive services to about 1,000 victims of domestic violence each year without community support.

Each month in this e-newsletter we list items most needed at this time for use by SWIC’s emergency shelter and transitional housing residents. For the month of August, we could use:
        · Air freshener;
        · Bathroom cleaner;
        · Toilet Paper.

If you are able to donate any of these items, please call SWIC’s office at 570.622.3991 or email swicagency@comcast.net to make arrangements. Thank you!

NOTE: Due to extensive renovations underway on SWIC facilities, we are no longer able to accept general donations (clothing, toys, small household items, etc.) until September 2010. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please consider SWIC as a recipient of your used items again later this summer.

Two Ways to Support SWIC

Boyer’s Food Markets Caring & Sharing Rebate Program

Boyer’s Food Markets runs a program to raise funds for nonprofit organizations called Caring & Sharing Rebate Program. Shoppers who have a small tab, which can be attached on a key ring, can allow the cashier at any of Boyer’s stores to scan the tab, and a certain percentage of that order is donated to the organization named. SWIC has tabs marked with SWIC’s name, and these tabs are free. Boyer’s has stores at the following locations: Ashland, Bernville, Berwick, Boyertown, Douglassville, Fleetwood, Frackville, Hazleton, Lansford, McAdoo, Mt. Carmel, Orwigsburg, Schuylkill Haven, Shenandoah, Tamaqua, and Womelsdorf. If you would like to have a tab or tabs to distribute to an organization in which you participate, please call SWIC’s office at 570.622.3991.

Boscov’s Friends Helping Friends

On Tuesday, October 5, Boscov’s is conducting its annual Friends Helping Friends day. Nonprofit organizations, such as SWIC, sell 25% off Shopping Passes in advance for $5 each. The Shopping Pass entitles the holder to 25% off purchases, with some exclusions. Shoppers also can register to win prizes, such as a flat screen TV, a diamond pendant, and a $500 shopping spree (each store will give away a $100 shopping spree.) The cost of $5 for each Shopping Pass purchased from SWIC goes entirely to SWIC. If you are interested in purchasing a Shopping Pass to benefit SWIC, call the office at 570.622.3991.

Out & About!

SWIC provides presentations with accurate and up-to-date information about domestic violence, safety planning, SWIC services, and how you can help. Recently (or in the near future), SWIC staff members have conducted presentations to medical offices, a prison impact class, a teen group, and senior citizen groups. In addition, a SWIC staff person speaks to churches or church groups about building bridges between SWIC and the faith community to enhance safety and better serve survivors in our community. We are beginning to schedule presentations for the fall. If interested in a presentation in any setting, please call Darla at 570.622.3991.

Stop by SWIC’s tables at the following upcoming events:

Thursday, September 16, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
